HOW TO BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND TURN THE BATTLE INTO SUCCESS!

When I was a child, I was obsessed with creating stories and acting them out to my shadow because I had overwhelming self doubt to perform in public. At some point in my childhood, I decided to turn my stories into onscreen short movies and have my friends act them out whilst I was behind the camera editing the outcome. Growing up in a country where the male career choices were to be a doctor, lawyer or an accountant the critics in my life were quick to cut me down. I bet some of you had similar experiences growing up?

I was afraid of what my parents would say. I was afraid that they would not pay for my studies and crush my dreams. I was afraid of failing at being a good son.

I graduated in Tourism Management and fell in love with the idea of travel and explore the world. Because I was not onboard with how life was mapped out for me, I rebelled against the idea of being ‘normal’ and spread my wings shortly after graduation. I Landed in Miami, USA in early 2001 and since then never looked back.

Now the the last 20 years of my life was nothing but smooth sailing I can promise you that, however I’m going too fast forward to the reasons why I believe everything happens for a reason and why patience is ‘the mother to success’ (a Vietnamese proverb).

“What if it does work out exactly how we imagined or greater?” Maybe I need to entertain this thought?

If you googled the definition of the word ‘Patience’ it’s very clear that there is no more powerful aid to success than self-possession. When we are patient we give ourselves time to reflect, before we emotionally hijack ourselves by our own emotions. Having the ability to be patient and continue on the journey to achieving our goals can help us see that it is consistent hard work and reflection that will generate successful outcomes in our lives. Funnily, growing up I only had one thought of what I wanted to be and since then I’ve traveled 50 plus countries, written some idyllic stories for some well known magazines, creatively contributed to some big businesses and achieved some incredible accolades.

This blog is at no means a self-help tool or a suggestion on how to act, it’s’ merely my real life journey because I know you are experiencing all the same hundreds of questions, doubts and insecurities I’m having whilst contributing to a very small startup called GROW. As GROW is becoming successful, I need to continue to learn how to remain calm amid the big and small twists and turns that ‘pop’ up in life. It’s only with patience that I will truly learn and understand the curveballs which will get thrown to me. “What if it does work out exactly how we imagined or greater?” Maybe I need to entertain this thought? Here are 4 key benefits I’m trying to improve by taking baby steps:

  • Self-possession:

A lack of success or progress can almost always be boiled down to a lack of patience. The most basic reason for impatience is a lack of self-control. When we lack self-control, we lack understanding and insight. When we lack understanding and insight, we lack the ability to plan, communicate and set realistic expectations. But when we claim control over these issues, we get to bask in the rewards that patience can deliver.

  • Smart decision-making:

Like many people in business I’ve been looking for an edge over the competition and ways to improve my performance. I’ve been disillusioned to believe that sharp business plans and the best talent around are a substitute for the virtues needed to guide and direct GROW in the right direction.

Patience is one of those virtues. When we are patient, we have the mindfulness to stop and focus on the present moment. By being in the moment, we are able to make wise choices that take both the big and small picture into account.

  • Hope:

Patience brings hope. It brings a continued renewal of belief in our desired goals and in the heights we are striving to achieve. When we are hopeful, we have a natural resilience and willingness to keep trying because we trust in the possibility of a good outcome.

  • Tolerance:

Patience increases our tolerance threshold. It gives us the foresight to expect obstacles on our path and to deal with them diplomatically. When we expect challenges, we respond with more courage, strength and optimism. The more easily we roll with the punches and learn to tolerate the quirks of other human beings and the unpredictable flow of the cycles of success, the less stress we experience and the more resilient we become.
